New kid on the block, Great White, has collaborated with Tappan Artist, Michael Wall to create artworks for their all-day cafe. Taking up residency practically underneath the iconic hanging Venice sign, the commission brings Wall’s playful exploration of form, shape and color to a new audience.
Embracing minimalism and craftsmanship and influenced by Modernist Sculpture, Neo-Geometric and Abstract Expressionism, UK-based Wall uses swaths of form in block colors to create an ambiguous yet approachable dialogue in abstraction. The use of powdered pigment allows for a subtle texture and unique depth, gathering their full potential when engaging with a collective audience and individual viewer.
About Michael Wall
Michael Wall uses swaths of form in block colors to create an ambiguous yet approachable dialogue in abstraction.
Great White’s owners, Sam Trude and Sam Cooper, were both born in Australia and grew up on the beaches and harbors of Sydney, usually found surfing or messing around with friends.
The were influenced heavily by Australia’s strong food and café culture and access to fresh produce in an easy going, fast and friendly way. It is this ethos that led them to create their new restaurant and, in turn, to Michael Wall’s unique aesthetic.
For interiors, Trude and Cooper wanted to create an inviting, comfortable and inspiring place in which to experience the hospitality and the food. Every aspect of the restaurant was thoughtfully designed and custom made, including 2 original pieces by Wall, who was flown out to produce the work exclusively. The result is a truly warm, welcoming and creative environment unlike anything else.
You can visit Great White at 1604 Pacific Avenue, Venice CA for breakfast, lunch or dinner, to enjoy a superb casual meal as you take in the inimitable work of Michael Wall.
