DESCRIPTION

Silk, sun, sand, salt, wind, wood, water | 2022

Initiated in 2016 on the beach in Fire Island, NY, the Burying Painting: Event Horizons series consists of time-based art installations that Perkins calls post-totem structures. Taking up to two years to complete, these performative installations are created in collaboration with nature itself. First, silk is stretched over wooden frames to make the structures. These structures are semi-buried, placed, or stacked outdoors in various locations for a period of time. They are then left to fade in the sun, be rained on, and experience hurricane force winds, ocean, snow, sand, animals, or whatever else fate has in store.

“I feel like my work is successful when it has drawn your attention back to nature. These are monumental works, yet they are not monuments. They are conceived to be removed, to age, to change.”
- James Perkins
