Michael Gittes

As an artist, one of Michael Gittes’ main goals is to literally incorporate other disciplines, like science, music, or history, into his process and work.  When he began professionally, his work was executed using a paint-filled medical syringe in place of a brush.  In 2012, Gittes produced work for the White House to make paintings for President Obama’s reelection.  In 2013, he had a private exhibition in the Veterans Room at the Park Avenue Armory, conceptually focused on the Civil War and the iconic men involved in its history. In 2014, Gittes exhibited near Yeoncheon on the border (Demilitarized Zone) between North and South Korea at a UN site from the Korean War. There, Gittes hung the flag of a united Korea (before its annexation and eventual division) from the chimney of a UN crematorium.  In 2015, Gittes wrote a book called “Do You Speak English?” about the early American Frontier, which he also illustrated.  He exhibited paintings from the book at Hou Yee Chan Gallery in Los Angeles.

Gittes newest series is called “My Elements.”  It is a united body of work that explores the potential of fire, water, and air to temporarily alter and influence a finished piece.  The temporary nature of the element’s influence evokes the ephemerality of a song.

Gittes will show this series in New York in 2017.
