Initiated in 2016 on the beach in Fire Island, New York, the “Burying Painting” series employs a system in nature to explore the experience of weathering the difficult circumstances of life and the existential questions that we all face. The work consists of time-based land art installations of specific objects that Perkins’ calls post-totem structures, usually remaining outdoors for a period of one month to one year. As the work ages, the colors change back and forth. Becoming darker as they become wet in the rain, lightening as they become bleached in the sun. Using wood and silk, the objects start outdoors in the language of sculpture and come indoors as paintings with marks made in collaboration with nature.  Perkins’ desire is to blur the lines of existence; between sculpture and painting, monumental land art and temporary works, human intervention and nature.

TAPPAN GIVES TO FACING HISTORY

This 4th of July we’re reflecting on how to bring America together through acknowledgement and education. Artists have always had a way of expressing the past that helps us understand much more than what most history books reflect. Outside of representation, we want to work toward a more inclusive future by donating 10% of proceeds to Facing History, a non-profit that helps educators create curriculum that circles around helping students gain the skills to be empathetic members of society who are civically engaged. Until July 8th consider supporting our emerging artists and educators working to get students involved in their communities. Giveback runs June 30 - July 8.
