Adorned with gloss varnish and gold ink, the new prints from Tokyo-based Ewelina Skowronska were created during one very hot Tokyo summer as the artist experimented with new ways to work. Across the series, sensual curves of the female form lounge in a number of poses, crisp hues mingling with muted ones as curved lines highlight selected details. In the artist’s native language, Polish, “Upaly” means “heat,” and a state of very hot weather that lasts a longer period of time. It can also describe a state of mind that is filled with boiling emotions and unspoken words. Across this series, the figures seem to languish in an invisible wave of heightened temperature and emotion as Skowronska’s expansive composition and cooling colors offer a brief respite from the heat.
