DESCRIPTION
Pastel on cotton paper | 2019
Multidisciplinary artist Ethan Caflisch made his first foray into painting with the “Figurative Series.” The ongoing body of work has its origins in photographs of commuters from London’s tube stations. Caflisch simplified and abstracted the images into paintings that focus on individual figures. While flattening and reducing his subjects into minimal shapes, he leaves just enough structure to convey the presence of people. Each anonymous individual is rendered in a bold selection of colors, which are directly referenced in the works’ titles.
In recent iterations of the series, Caflisch sketches his subjects more freely, without photographic references. Influenced by film stills, he attempts to convey a sense of paused action in each work.
