DESCRIPTION

Monoprint on found paper | 2018

A collection of hand-printed works on paper created between 2018 and 2021, this series from artist Mike McMullen was made in a space without judgment. Creating this work (nearly 100 prints) over the course of three years felt at times more like a rocky relationship to the artist than a practice. But he always returned to them. McMullen treats each of these prints like a discovery, like something he has dug up and gently wiped the dust from. These works are his memories, his impulses and his electric circuitry all on display. They are the exports of his interior. Images etched from memory. Words plucked in passing, then hastily applied like some psychedelic prose. They are reminders, road maps and numbers on a napkin. They are love letters tied to a brick, crashing through a window.

“My practice is more akin to automatic writing or gestural drawing than it is a planned production, less concerned with outcomes than honesty.”

BOBBY BERK ON MIKE MCMULLEN

“This print has a real simplicity and quietness to it, and that's what I love about it. It doesn't shout, it whispers. And sometimes, you want your art to have a really subtle and understated feel.”
