Archival ink on museum-quality cotton rag paper

Location: West Texas
James Needham captured this photograph at a kismet moment—what he calls a mystical interweaving of sight and sound. Early one morning while driving through West Texas, “A Horse With No Name” by America played on the car stereo. While driving past a lone basketball ring set against a mountainous backdrop, the lyrics “there was sand and hills and rings” coincidentally drifted from the speakers. Needham slowed down his car to photograph the scene, which evoked a sense of both loneliness and tranquility.

“There’s a limited amount of space within a viewfinder or on a canvas and what someone chooses to fill it with says so much about them and what they were feeling at the time. It’s like a Rorschach test we create ourselves.”
