Tappan Residency
Alison Cooley
Easton, Maryland-based artist Alison Cooley’s abstract work is always rooted in nature, but Perenne, created during her Tappan residency in Los Angeles, offers a slightly more specific perspective. This series takes its name from the term “perennial,” referencing its literal meaning as continuously reoccurring, but also its connection to the organic world — in this case, its juxtaposition with the manmade one: the golden-pink sunsets and the curves of the canyons against the cracked pavement and graffiti.

Alison Cooley says
“During my time in Los Angeles, I was moved by the transitions and edges of the city, places where ridges and canyons meet boulevards and back alleys then eventually roll in to sand and sea.”

Alison Cooley says
“Perenne speaks to the instinct (human and otherwise) to endure or continually recur. The beauty is in honoring moments of harmony and accepting the continuous movement of the natural world.”
